Who am I? What do I want? What would I like to do after graduation? I’ve asked myself these questions severally to the point where I almost get bored with the answers. My name remains AJ, I’m a fresh graduate from the department of Genetics/Biotechnology, University of Calabar, Calabar. It hurts that after 4 years of stressful studying, my degree doesn’t come with a title…( unlike with graduates from Medical, Law, and engineering departments whose degrees come with reputable titles - Doctor. Barrister, Engineer) ...sometimes I wish I can be addressed as “Geneticist AJ”.

Anyways, I was particularly moved to write this article to welcome my co-fresh graduates to the real world and also to inspire them to greatness.
I know a young girl who went through school sleeping with every dick and harry who had influence on her result script. At the end she graduated with a 1st class, and her parents were damn proud of her. Along the line the devil showed up: she lost her trophy (her certificate) to a fire incident and she was left with no certificate, an expired integrity, and nothing else but her body to earn a living.
How stranded can you be? If something awkward happens to your certificate, what would you be left with? How would you earn a living? Even with your 1st class degree intact, what is the guarantee that you would get a good job?
We should always have a plan B, something to fall back to, for me I already have plans B to Z. I’m an entertainer, am smoking hot on stage. BUT if music doesn't work out I have other things to fall back to. I  am a creative designer; from Ankara accessories to greeting cards, hair making, styling. Aside that I am a public speaker, and a creative writer. Don’t get bored with my adverts, it’s only a means to let you know that there is a lot more to you than being a graduate. Lots of us are scared of life after school because we are uncertain of what the future holds for us.
The truth is “life after school is the beginning of real life.” We are expected to put to practice all the theories and principles we’ve learnt. When you go for an interview are you required to state the theory of cells or the principles of biotechnology? I doubt. What you’ll need is a real theory and your own principles of life that would give you an edge over others.

What can you do? What are you passionate about? What gives you joy & fulfillment? What can you offer to the ever growing economic market? What adds significant value to your bank account? Pardon me if I ask a lot of questions but I need you to answer them to yourself.
There are thousands of graduates with no job, why join them? You can make a difference, because you are better an employer than an employee. I am positive you have something else to show off aside your certificate, you’ve got your natural gifts & talents, most of them yet to be explored, (unexplored wealth).
We all have at least 3 talents each, discover and explore them. Mike Tyson knew he was good at beating people up and getting into trouble so he decided to beat people legally and get paid for it. You too can make a decision today, whatever your skills are you could put it into good use and make money out of it. Do you love to cook? Try new recipes every day, you could make the best chef someday. Do you always imagine abstract things? write them down, lyrics, poems, articles, etc, you could sell big with the right connection. Can you convince me to buy anything? That’s some good marketing skills? Start buying and selling anything you can lay your hands on, soonest you’ll be an international marketer. Are you good at football? get on that field and get paid having fun. If you have great heights go bounce some balls or better still hit the run way. We all mustn’t end up in a laboratory viewing blood stains, or in an animal house feeding albino rats, or in the bank counting peoples’ money. If it gives you fulfillment do it, but if it doesn’t do something else… Do what you love.
our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, our greatest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It’s our light not our darkness that scares us most. We ask ourselves, who am I to be gorgeous, talented, wealthy? Actually who am I not to be? I am created by God to do exploit, and as I let my light shine I am unconsciously giving others the permission to do same”.

I urge you today to be inspired by these words, to make the best of yourself, and to take 100% responsibility for yourself.
